Tamil Nadu ranks first among states in terms of production of rice, sugarcane, groundnuts, coffee, tea, spices, cotton, rubber, cashew nuts, coconut products, cardamom, pepper, vanilla, cloves, ginger, turmeric, banana, mangoes, mangosteen, tamarind, betel leaves, and tobacco.

 6. The state has a literacy rate of 84 percent. In 2001, the state was ranked second after Maharashtra on the Human Development Index. The state was ranked third in 2004 and fifth in 2005. In 2006, the state was ranked fifth out of 22 states.

4. Capital City: Chennai

Chennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the biggest cities in India and the second-largest metropolitan area in India after Mumbai. It is located along the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. The name Chennai is derived from the combination of two words “Kanche” meaning black and “Nedu” meaning land. Thus, Chennai translates to Black Land. It was once a small fishing village until the British East India Company expanded its business to other parts of South India. In 1640, Fort St George was built and in 1760, Madras city was founded. It became the capital of Madras Presidency in 1801 and then of Madras State between 1956-1971. After independence, it became the capital of the union territory of Madras.
